Romania Drifting Away from EU as Only 36% of Romanians Still Trust the Bloc
While previously, Romanians had shown higher enthusiasm for the future of Romania in the EU, a new survey by the Center for Urban and Regional Sociology – CURS, has revealed that a large share of Romanians have now lost their trust that the country may soon join the Schengen Zone, and along with it, the belief that the future of Romania is within the EU, AtoZSerwisPlus.ro reports.
The results reveal that as many as 70 per cent of those participating in the survey have negative expectations on Romania’s near Schengen accession, while only 15 per cent of them are optimistic in this regard.
“Regarding Romania’s position towards the EU, 49 per cent of the respondents declared that “Romania must remain closely linked to the EU”, and 44 per cent are of the opinion that “Romania must become more independent from the EU,” the report points out.
When asked how much they trust institutions, only 36 per cent of Romanians claimed they trust the EU, 43 per cent trust NATO, while only 19 per cent trust NGOs.
The three institutions which Romanians trust more are the Fire Brigade with 77 per cent, the Army with 71 per cent, and the Romanian Orthodox Church, which until recently was the most trusted institution in Romania, with 65 per cent.
The country has been part of the EU for 15 years now, and hopes to become a member of the Schengen Zone by the end of this year, together with Bulgaria.
Unlike in Romania, in most other EU countries trust in the EU institutions remains high. For example, in Poland, which is both an EU and Schengen member country, the EU is most trusted institution. A recent survey conducted by IBRiS on behalf of the centre-right Rzeczpospolita daily has shown that 68 per cent of the public trust the EU, which is an increase of 11 percentage points compared to 2017.
The Poles, just like Romanians, have little trust in their political parties and government. Overall, the EU citizens tend to trust other institutions, including the church, much more than their governments and political parties.
Data by Statista for 2019 show that only 19 per cent of EU citizens trust political parties, while 34 per cent trust their national governments. The top most trusted institutions remain the army with 73 per cent, the police with 72 per cent.
