Netflixs Wednesday TV Series Prompts Tourism Boost to Romania
According to Euronews, the interest in Romanian sights where the series was shot has boomed, also boosting Romanian tourism, AtoZSerwisPlus.ro reports.
Wednesday’s fans can visit the same places where the series was filmed, such as the ghost town of Jericho and the Nevermore Academy, which were recorded in the Buftea studios in Romania, right outside Bucharest.
In general, the number of visitors in Romania increased by 21.8 per cent in 2022, totalling 11.3 million visitors, the statistical office, INS, revealed.
According to INS, tourists spent 24.3 million nights in Romania, which was up by a 17.8 per cent increase compared to the previous year. About 1.5 million foreigners visited the country in 2022 – 88.1 per cent more than in 2021.
The Netflix TV series might boost tourism in Romania, which after the COVID-19 pandemic, was deeply impacted. Statista data shows that the number of arrivals in tourist accommodations in Romania in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, reached only 6.34 million from 13.37 million recorded in 2019, which was the highest record hit in the country.
The numbers have improved in the following years – to 9.28 million in 2021 and 11.3 million in 2022, while since 2015, the number of arrivals in tourist accommodation in Romania has been increasing by approximately one million every year.
Statista also points out that the most common type of accommodation is agrotourism establishments. This type of tourism is common in Romania, but it has become more famous in the last few years.
Agrotourism intends to bring visitors to farms or ranches for different types of activities such as direct-to-consumer sales, agricultural education, hospitality, recreation and entertainment. However, hotels still represent the largest number of beds offered, totalling 199,922, while agrotourism establishments were equipped with approximately 50,000 beds in 2019.
One of the most famous destinations in Romania is the Carpathian Mountains, which are known for beautiful landscapes, wildlife, natural parks as well as medieval castles, which are located inside the mountains. In addition, the royal Peles Castles, as well as Dracula’s Castle, which is a fortified church in Transylvania, also known as Bran Castle, is a very famous destination in Romania.
In general, tourism in Romania is concentrated in mountain resorts rather than hotels and seaside resorts, while over 2,000 tourist accommodation facilities are located in the mountains.
