You would need the following for an Austrian Schengen Visa application:
Employed people would need to provide proof of employment and taxation. Those who are self-employed will need to provide documents regarding their business and taxation.
The German-speaking country of Austria has an area of 83,871km2 in the old continent of Europe. It is one of the richest countries in the world by per capita GDP terms, and amongst the most powerful economies in the European Union.
Located at the center of European traffic between east and west along the Danubian trade route and between north and south through the Alpine passes, the country remains a top tourist attraction in Europe.
Foreign travelers have been able to apply for the Austrian Schengen Visa since 1997 when Austria as an EU Member State also became a member state of the Schengen Area. In 2017 alone, 304,556 short-term visa applications were filed at the Austrian embassies/consulates around the world. It is estimated that 38.6 million tourists, including EU nationals, visited the country in the same year.
When applying for a Schengen visa there is a non-refundable mandatory visa fee every applicant must pay.
The Schengen visa costs vary depending on the type of visa and age of the applicant as well as some other exceptions stated below in the text. The Schengen visa fee can be paid in the designated consulate/embassy via cash, debit or credit card. However, some consulates may not allow you to pay by credit card.
| Schengen Visa Category | Fee in EUR | Fee in USD* |
| Adult | 80€ | 90$ |
| Child between 6-12 years of age | 40€ | 45$ |
| Child younger than 6 years of age | Free | Free |

* The applicable visa fee in USD (US Dollar) is as per the current exchange rate. It is subject to change without notice.
Despite the fact that these fees are static and unchangeable until the Schengen members decide otherwise altogether, there are some categories exempt from paying this amount.
The visa fees may also be waived for participants aged 25 years or less in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events, organized by non-profit organizations. The decision will be made case by case according to the relevance of the event.
Again, in case the visa is denied there is no refund of the money paid.

Do keep in mind that if you plan on going to Austria on a visitor visa, the person who has invited you will have to provide a guarantee on your behalf.
A short-stay visa, Schengen visa allows the visa holder to travel to any of the members of the Schengen Area for a 90 days period per stay for business or tourism.

Type C – for less than 90 days
Type D – beyond 90 days
Usually, the processing time for Type C visas is about 15 to 20 days.
When there are many applications being processed simultaneously, the processing time can go up to 30 days as well.
In exceptional cases, even 60 days might be needed for processing.
As in certain cases the processing time can go up to 60 days, the recommended course of action is to apply for your Austrian short-stay visa as soon as possible, but not earlier than 3 months before your scheduled visit.
