Romania’s Entry to US Visa Waiver Programme Paused Amid Stricter Border Policies
Romania will not be granted visa-free travel to the United States in 2025, despite meeting all the eligibility requirements under the previous administration. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that the decision to delay Romania’s inclusion in the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) was made to enhance national border protection.
Romania Met Key Criteria, But Entry Blocked
Romania had met the conditions set by the U.S. government, including lowering its visa rejection rate to below 3% in 2024. This achievement positioned the country for VWP inclusion by early 2025, allowing Romanian citizens to travel to the U.S. without needing a visa.
However, the Trump administration reversed the decision made by the Biden administration, which had approved Romania’s entry. The new administration’s stance is part of a broader shift toward stricter immigration and travel controls.
Officials Respond to Reversal
Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu downplayed the development, referring to the pause as a "technical issue." Meanwhile, immigration expert McLaughlin noted that while Romania could still join the programme in the future, the current administration is raising the bar for participation.
Tightening U.S. Travel Policies Across the Board
The Trump administration is reportedly introducing a color-coded risk list for foreign nationals. Countries placed on the red list may face outright travel bans. Although Romania hasn’t been added to that list, the direction of U.S. policy indicates a more selective and security-focused approach.
In line with these developments, U.S. embassies across 17 EU countries have warned travellers that non-compliance with updated U.S. entry rules could result in deportation.
